Un-muting the needs of your body

Dear One,

Are you living at the speed of your mind, or the pace of your body?

(This is my long-winded way of letting you know the next restorative workshop is this Saturday 1-2:30pm, and we have 13 spots left! Sign up here.)

Many of us were taught to strive for jobs where we would be asked to utilize the motivation, whims, fears, chaos, and priorities of the thinking mind.

And our body is simply along for the ride.

Besides the annoyances of having to pee and gather food, modern day humans, working in a certain economic niche and job type, could spend seemingly countless hours sitting at a computer. And life would seem full. Because it is busy. And you're scurrying to keep up with demands. And the demands often come through a screen.

But the demands of your body are there.

Just, you know, on mute.

For folks who use their body for work, the demands of their body may be similarly inconvenient to capitalism. So even though the body is a tool for work, its organic needs, capacity, and rhythms are often also on mute.

So, now what.

Well, I propose that you hold a teeny tiny boundaries revolution for your body.

I propose that you hydrate AND pee. And work to feel less annoyed by it.

I propose that you eat when you are hungry. And battle the internalized voice that feels guilty for taking a meal break.

I propose that you set time aside in your schedule for NOTHINGNESS and see what happens. And combat the voice that says every hour should be spoken for.

I propose that you give yourself an end to your work day. And notice any compulsions to keep doing one more thing, and question where that's coming from.

I propose that you take breaks from work that don't involve tending to other work, like checking personal email, and try to remember what humans do for non-screen joy.

Not everyone works in a context where they can safely experiment with boundaries without consequences. But maybe you can create your own version of a teeny tiny body boundary, within your unique sphere of influence.

If the yoga mat is where you practice reconnecting to your body so that you can un-mute it, join me.

Flow & Restore classes happen Thursdays at 5:45-7pm, in-person and livestream/recorded. The next Befriending Stillness Radically Restorative workshop + bodywork is happening this Saturday from 1-2:30pm, also in-person and livestream/recorded.

Working to resist the body muting alongside you,

~Alex
